The district's capital Kitzbühel, situated at the foot of the Kitzbüheler Horn (1.996m) and the Hahnenkamm (1.712m), accommodates about 8.000 inhabitants. Especially thanks to pioneers in the alpine winter sports like Franz Reisch, Toni Sailer or Hansi Hinterseer the town gained international prominence. Kitzbühel, where already Illyrians have settled in the eleventh century b.C. in order to mine copper, received the town privilege in 1271. In the late nineteenth century the region recorded an economic boom due to the railroad track construction and, owing to skiing's rising popularity, the first winter tourists could be welcomed in the first years of the twentieth century.
Today, more than 100 years later, there are almost 60 modern cable car and ski lift facilities as well as about 170 piste kilometers available; moreover Kitzbühel disposes of more than 120 kilometers of guided mountainbike tracks and 500 kilometers of hiking trails. Next to numerous golf and tennis courts, an ice sports centre, many historic buildings Kitzbühel offers a hideaway in nature; so there is a scenic view form the Schwarzsee lake to the surrounding mountains. Eventually a lot of considerable events like the International Hahnenkamm Race, Kitzbühel's Alpenrallye, Hansi Hinterseer Open-Air as well as tennis and golf tournaments, are held in Kitzbühel.
